With the New Year now upon us, can we please ask secretaries of the various organisations within the village to make use of the Village Diary, kept at Moore’s Greengrocers, to record forthcoming events. This reduces the chance of too many events clashing.
The Neighbourhood Plan Group are holding further meetings at the Jubilee Hall, both tomorrow, Thursday January 8th, between 7.30pm and 9pm, and on Saturday, January 31st between 10.30am and 2.30pm. Those who are interested in finding out how this is progressing are invited to attend, with any ideas and views.
Mevagissey FC first eleven are in action on Saturday, January 10th with a ‘home’ match against Bude in the East Cornwall Premier League Division One. The match ball is sponsored by On The Rocks, and the kick-off is at 2.30pm. The Duchy League Division 4 team does not have a match this weekend.
There is a Quiz Night in aid of Mevagissey Youth Club on Saturday, January 10th at the Jubilee Hall, commencing at 7.30pm. The quiz-master on this occasion is Mike Mutton. As usual, the charge is £3.00 per head, with everyone invited to bring their own drinks and nibbles. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available during the interval, when the raffle will also be drawn.
Church services next Sunday include Morning Prayer at St Peter’s Church at 9.30am, whilst at St Andrew’s Church, there is Family Worship at 10.45am, led by Mr N Tregonning.

Percy Mitchell – a traditional boat builder par excellence at the National Maritime Museum, Cornwall.
If you’re going to be driving through Mevagissey for the first time when you visit, this video gives a good primer on what to expect. It can be a little daunting for visitors, especially if you’re not used to narrow lanes. This was taken about seven years ago, but little has changed (except the building projects are finished!)
Another successful quiz night was held on Saturday, this time the Christmas Quiz in aid of the Friends of Mevagissey Surgeries, who had created a party atmosphere in the hall. An enjoyable evening ended in a victory for the ‘Hangers On’ team. A sum of nearly £250.00 was raised, and thanks go to all who supported this event.
There is a Christmas Bazaar, hosted by the Mevagissey Committee of Cancer Research, at St Andrew’s Church Hall on Thursday, December 4th, between 10am and 12 noon. Amongst other things on offer, there will be a book stall, cakes. bric-a-brac and Christmas decorations and gifts. Refreshments will be available. All are welcome.
The Youth Club are holding a Table Top Sale on Friday, December 5th, from 10am. Anyone interested in booking a table at £5.00 should contact Anne-Marie on 842011.
St Peter’s Church are holding ‘Cribfest’ from Friday, December 5th until Sunday, December 7th. The school will be in church on Friday morning, after which all are invited to come and see a delightful display of cribs and nativity scenes, including those from the school and homemade. Hours of opening are 12 noon until 4pm on Friday, 10am until 4pm on Saturday and from 11am until 3pm on Sunday. Tea and coffee and mince pies will be available.
On Friday, December 5th, there will be a ‘Christmas Evening’ at the Museum from 6pm until 10pm. There will be fun for all, and entry is free. The Mevagissey Four will be entertaining with carols and seasonal songs; there will be story-telling; a children’s Christmas trail around the museum; a children’s craft table. Mevagissey FC are in action on Saturday, December 6th, with the First eleven at home to St Austell in the East Cornwall Premier League, Division 1 game. The Second team visit High Street in the Duchy Division 4. Both matches kick-off at 2.30pm.
The village Christmas Lights will be switched on at 6pm on Saturday, December 6th, on the harbour. This will be preceded by a parade from the Fire Station starting at 5pm. There will be lots of entertainment with music from 5pm until 9pm.
Mevagissey Male Voice Choir, Mevagissey Ladies Choir and Charlestown Primary School Choir will be together in concert at St Andrew’s Church on Saturday, December 6th at 7.30pm. Tickets, priced at £6.00, are available from the post office, and on the door.
Church services on Sunday, December 7th, the Second Sunday in Advent, include Holy Communion at St Peter’s Church at 9.30am, and at St Andrew’s Church at 10.45am.
There is still time to book a place for the Jubilee Hall Christmas Luncheon, to be held on Monday, December 8th at 12.30pm. The traditional Christmas fare, with all the trimmings and tea or coffee, will cost just £8.50. Anyone interested should contact Audrey Wakefield on 842257.
Mevagissey Feast Week Committee are holding their Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 9th December 7.00pm at Mevagissey Activity Centre.

There was a good turnout for the Christian Aid Quiz Night on Friday, and an enjoyable evening saw a narrow victory for the Latecomers team.
