A vacancy for the position of Mevagissey Harbour Master has become available.
Prospective candidates should meet the following requirements;

A good level of practical marine experience.
Live in or be willing to locate to within the Parish of Mevagissey.
Owing to the nature of the work be physically fit and healthy.

Salary – Negotiable dependant on experience.

Job Description Harbour Master

To be familiar with all the Harbour Acts 1774,1862,1888,1892 and 1964 Harbours Act, and any subsequent legislation as the Marine and Coastal Access Act.

Be conversant with the following codes of practice:-

Port Marine Safety Code
Port Waste Management Plan
Port Operations Policy
Port Pollution Clean-up policy
Trust Port Review and Modernising of Trust Port
Open Port Duty
Attend meetings as indicated by the Trustees ie:- S.W.R.P.A.
Safety meetings with MCA
Get involved with groups such as F.L.A.G. etc where funding is possible.

Main Duties:

The general running of the Harbour which includes, but is not restricted to, the following:-

Moorings:

Monitoring vessels entering and departing the harbour.
Allocating moorings to fishing vessels.
Maintaining the pleasure boat waiting list and allocating moorings as and when the owners reach the top of the list.
Maintain the moorings of the premier mooring holders.
Allocate seasonal moorings for pool and outhauls.
Maintain the visiting and outhaul moorings.

Buildings:

Maintain all the buildings on the harbour curtilage, which include:

Light house [interior and exterior]
Lofts
Aquarium [interior and exterior]
West Quay buildings [interior and exterior]. This includes the bait store, Numbers 1 & 2 chill stores, ice bunker, and the loft above.
Jetty hut.
Harbour Office [interior and exterior].
East Quay loft.

Harbour Walls:

Maintain all Harbour Quays, piers, wharves and slipways.
Check all access ladders and steps; ensure fit for purpose.

Cleaning:

Check bins are emptied daily, quays and wharves swept, and organise the skip emptying.
Organise emptying of waste oil tank and disposal of hazardous substances.

Lifting Equipment:

Daily checks on all cranes and fork lift.

Jetty Crane,
No 1 crane West Quay
No 2 crane West Quay
Portable diesel / hydraulic crane.
Fork Lift.
Daily checks on temperatures of chill stores, bait store, ice plant; responsible for calling in maintenance engineers.

Car Parking:

Check and maintain the car park ticket machines
General checking of car park surface and all road markings, and signage.

Safety:

Checking of safety rails around the harbour.
Lifebuoys
Fire extinguishers
Trip hazards.
In charge of any pollution clean-up operations and liaise with the correct organisations. + logging any such event.
Lighting of quays.
Checking with organisers of events around the harbour for compliance with safety issues and insurance.
Annual talk to pupils at Mevagissey School on general harbour safety.

Aquarium:

Responsible for the operation of pumps, beach seawater filter, and general running maintenance.

Office:

Work on new projects as directed by the Board of Trustees.
Work with the Clerk on finding grant aid to assist with the cost of new projects.
Maintain a daily log of events.
Maintain daily cold store and ice plant log.
Maintain monthly safety records.
Keep monthly bulk ice records and prepare for invoicing.
Maintain landing dues.
Maintain pleasure boat waiting list.
Write accident reports in the event of accidents, and liaise with Insurance Broker, MCA, MAIB as considered necessary.
Order general supplies for maintenance around the harbour.
Maintain mooring records. Fishing and pleasure.
Rent out summer moorings space.
Make out annual planned maintenance list.
Write monthly report copy to each Trustee and Clerk, + copy for Parish Magazine.
Write annual News Letter.
CCTV system.
With Clerk assist with all annual mooring accounts.
Employ seasonal staff, and organise rotas for Clerk.
Direct Maintenance Staff in their daily and weekly routines.
Maintain the Hazardous Waste Management Report on an annual basis.
